Pet Portraits in Watercolor

In this class, participants will practice watercolor while painting the portrait of a beloved pet. Bring a photo of the pet you would like to celebrate, and receive instruction from an artist who has painted many commissioned pet portraits in watercolor. Instructor Hannah Day will share her insights and her approach to rendering animals in this medium, walking you through a layering process that yields a portrait with vibrancy, detail, and depth. Painting animals is a great way to build familiarity with watercolor for beginners, or to further develop your skills if you have experience with the medium. Pet portraits make great gifts for the holiday season - come enjoy an evening of painting and walk away with a gift for a loved one (or yourself).

Pop up! Learn to make an artistic pop up book

This special class will explore simple book arts by introducing participants to pop up art and paper cutting. Students will learn foundational “folds” for pop up elements in book making and then dream up an imaginative way to use those simple devices to create images in their own pop up book.

With an introduction to paper cutting technique, students will expand on their designs and create something enchanting. Artists will have some multimedia options if they wish to adorn their pop up elements and book pages (such as watercolor, colored pencils, etc), or may opt to let the cut paper speak for itself.

In this four week course we will cover: the basic rules underlying pop up mechanics, beginning pop up “folds”, proper knife handling, foundational paper cutting skills and theory. This course is suitable for anyone interested in exploring these topics, as well as mixed media, visual storytelling, and the whimsical magic of creating precious paper things.
